Understanding What’s Included in the Charter Price
One of the biggest surprises for first-time charter guests is that not every yacht charter is priced the same way. Some charters include almost everything in a single price, while others separate the yacht’s operating expenses from the charter fee. Understanding the difference before you book helps you compare yachts more accurately and avoid unexpected costs.
At Yacht Charter Agents, we’ll explain exactly how your chosen yacht is priced so you know what to expect before confirming your charter.
What Is an All-Inclusive Yacht Charter?
An all-inclusive charter combines most of your holiday costs into one upfront price. Depending on the yacht and destination, this may include:
- Professional captain and crew
- Meals and snacks
- Standard beverages
- Fuel for normal cruising
- Water toys
- Mooring fees
- Taxes (where applicable)
The exact inclusions vary between yachts, so it’s important to review each yacht’s terms carefully.
Even on all-inclusive charters, certain costs—such as premium wines and spirits, special requests, scuba diving, dockage outside the yacht’s normal cruising area or extraordinary fuel usage—may incur additional charges. Always review the yacht’s individual charter terms before booking.
Advantages
- Easy budgeting
- Fewer additional costs during the trip
- Simple payment process
- Popular with guests who prefer certainty
What Is a Plus-Expenses Charter?
A plus-expenses charter separates the yacht charter fee from the operating expenses incurred during your trip. Instead of paying one all-inclusive price, you’ll pay the charter fee plus the actual costs associated with running the yacht.
These expenses are commonly managed through an Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA) or a similar expense account, depending on the destination and charter type.
Typical expenses may include:
- Food and beverages selected by the guests
- Fuel based on actual consumption
- Dockage and marina fees
- Local taxes where applicable
- Special requests during the charter
At the end of the charter, the captain or management company provides a detailed accounting of how these funds were used. Any unused balance is typically refunded, while additional expenses beyond the allowance may require settlement before disembarkation.
| Feature | All-Inclusive Charter | Plus-Expenses Charter |
|---|---|---|
| Charter Fee | Includes most costs | Yacht hire only |
| Food & Drinks | Usually included | Paid from APA or actual expenses |
| Fuel | Usually included (within normal use) | Actual consumption |
| Marina Fees | Often included | Usually additional |
| Budget Certainty | Higher | Depends on spending and itinerary |
| Flexibility | Moderate | High |
Which Is Better?
Neither pricing model is inherently better. They simply suit different types of charters. All-inclusive pricing offers simplicity and predictable budgeting. Plus-expenses pricing offers greater flexibility, allowing guests to tailor food, beverages, cruising distances and onboard experiences to their own preferences.
The right option depends on:
- Your destination
- The yacht you choose
- Your group
- Your travel style
- Your budget priorities
Why Do Some Destinations Use Different Pricing Models?
Pricing conventions often vary by region. For example, many Caribbean crewed yacht charters are offered on an all-inclusive basis, while Mediterranean charters commonly use a plus-expenses model with an APA. However, there are exceptions. Some Caribbean yachts use APA, some Mediterranean yachts include additional services, and certain charter fleets follow their own pricing structures. Rather than assuming every yacht in a destination follows the same model, it’s important to review the pricing for the individual yacht you’re considering.
How Yacht Charter Agents Helps
Comparing charter prices isn’t always straightforward. Two yachts with similar weekly rates can have very different overall costs depending on what is included. We’ll explain:
- Exactly what’s included in the charter fee.
- Which expenses are additional.
- Whether an APA applies.
- Typical operating costs for your itinerary.
- The estimated total cost before you book.
Our goal is to ensure you understand the complete picture, allowing you to compare yachts with confidence and avoid surprises.
